Review: ‘Haunt You To The End’ #1 Puts The Climate Crisis In A Haunted House

The world is about to come to an end. In Haunt You To The End, the end of the world doesn’t get in the way of a good old haunting.

Ryan Cady, Andrea Mutti, and Frank Cvetkovic tell the story of the last haunted place on a dying Earth.

At the dawn of the 22nd century, Earth is rapidly becoming inhospitable. As the planet begins to burn, archeological tourism is beginning to boom across the world. In order to try to provide hope to a dying world, billionaire Callum Shah has organized an expedition to one of the most haunted places on Earth, including journalist Matt Park and medical doctor Maddi O’Connell. After all, if they can prove the haunting is real, that means there’s life after death. What they don’t expect is the terror that comes with it.

Cady spends the right amount of time here balancing between world building, character development and scares. We get the sense of hopelessness from the dying world. Shah’s sales pitch is convincing. But then the expedition heads for the haunted island and it gets genuinely scary. The flight takes a frightening turn that seems mundane, but Cady shows nothing is how it seems. It’s a great introduction with just enough horror to hook you.

Mutti is a master of atmosphere. There’s a reason he’s become one of the busiest artists in horror. He creates a distinct visual footprint that’s grimy and feels wrong. The world around the characters is clearly ours but off, an evolution of what it can be. He then paces the story incredibly well, using his layouts to build tension, adds the right amount of shadow with his colors to create a sense of unease. It’s the perfect art to build the story right along the script.
