Yuta’s moviemaking career started with a request from his mother to record her final moments. After her death, Yuta meets a mysterious girl named Eri, who takes his life in new directions. The two begin creating a movie together, but Eri is harboring an explosive secret.
Goodbye, Eri is a one-shot manga from Tatsuki Fujimoto (Chainsaw Man, Fire Punch). Since the smash-hit success of Chainsaw Man, Fujimoto has become one of the most interesting young manga creators working today. Not only have his manga garnered a cult following, but his art assistants have gone on to create their own hit manga as well. These assistants include Tatsuya Endo (Spy x Family), Yuji Kaku (Hell’s Paradise), and Yukinobu Tatsu (Dandadan).
There’s an indie-movie feel to Fujimoto’s work that sets his stories apart from other manga typically published by Shonen Jump. Goodbye, Eri is a fascinating read that gives us a peek into Fujimoto’s artistic process. The story works as a bizarre drama and gives solid advice for anyone setting out on their own creative project.
Goodbye, Eri manages to juggle multiple layers of storytelling with cinematic presentation. The feelings the manga evokes come as a surprise and the story had me guessing until the very end.
