Élodie Durand’s ‘Transitions: A Mother’s Journey’ Explores Gender Identity And Family Dynamics

by Richard Bruton

Based on true events, Transitions is an emotional, informative, and affirming book, exploring the journey of a parent and their trans child.

“I thought I was open-minded…”

The award-winning graphic novelist Élodie Durand‘s new work Transitions: A Mother’s Journey, charts the true story of a family’s journey to acceptance and understanding of a trans child. Newly translated into English by Evan McGorray, Transitions will be published by Top Shelf Productions in November 2023.

In Durand’s tale, the university biologist Anne Marbot learns that the 19-year-old she raised as ‘Lucie’ is now a transgender man named Alex. She struggles to understand her son’s identity and is overwhelmed by questions, some reasonable, others emotional, all of them coming from a parent’s struggle to understand their child. All of which leads Anne on her own journey of self-discovery, along a difficult path, at times straining the relationship between mother and child.

It’s a tale of transformation and acceptance, understanding and love, something that sounds like required reading for all those interested in the human condition, in the difficulties faced with allyship at times, and with the sometimes problematic differences in how we always thought we might react and our immediate reactions when faced with a life-changing, relationship changing revelation. For every family where an LGBTQ+ child comes out with no difficulty, there are many more where the journey is fraught with problems.

This from the Top Shelf PR…

“When I met Anne, there was no resource in France for parents living through the transition of their child. Anne felt powerless to understand or support her son. She had this desire to bear witness for others, to find a way to help.

As I began to research the issues, it was like a relief for me to explore the role of gender in our private and public lives,” continues Durand. “It became clear that gender is a concern for us all — that this intimate story is also the story of every family.” – Élodie Durand.

“Looking back, I am still surprised that the journey was so long and winding. Today, I simply say: Alex is my son.” – Anne Marbot

This empathetically researched and moving graphic novel, drawing deeply from one family’s real experiences, plots a compassionate road map for the often difficult search for acceptance.

In a world, especially in America, where trans people are increasingly vilified and subjected to hatred, it’s books like Transitions that do the important act of opening up a dialogue, addressing the hard issues, forcing anyone to question just how they would react. And more than anything, a book like Transitions makes the world a little more accepting.

Just from the few pages accompanying the book at Top Shelf’s site, it looks phenomenal, such a wonderful variety of styles, the colour work stunning, the storytelling so strong. Everything I’ve seen and read screams important book here.
