Kevin Writes An Original Musical On The Next ‘Riverdale’

by Rachel Bellwoar

For the final musical episode of Riverdale, the series couldn’t just have the cast sing songs from any old musical. Only an original would do, or at least that’s what the series is banking on in this trailer for “Archie the Musical,” which has Kevin (Casey Cott) taking credit for writing the show:

Will the series regret not sticking to a more established vehicle or will the new songs not be “new” as the word “original” implies, and be more like Rocky Horror, with the show rewriting history to make Rocky Horror exist in the ’50s?

One interesting storyline from this week’s episode: the decision to create more parallels between Oh Mija and I Love Lucy. Whereas Hiram (Mark Consuelos) is the one being accused of being a Communist here, it was Lucille Ball who was accused of being a Red in real life and just as I Love Lucy ended at the same time Ball and Desi Arnaz were getting a divorce, it sounds like Hermione (Marisol Nicols) and Hiram’s marriage will be dissolving along with their TV show.

Another storyline that could be promising: Betty (Lili Reinhart) starting her own newsletter. Undoubtedly it won’t stay anonymous long but hopefully Betty can stir up some trouble while it lasts.

Some other thoughts on “The Crucible”:

  • Couldn’t the River Vixens have done the same thing that the Bulldogs did when Clifford Blossom (Barclay Hope) tried to kick Reggie (Charles Melton) off the team and threatened to strike if Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) was removed as captain or does Evelyn Evernever (Zoé De Grand Maison) have more support than viewers realize?
  • Missed Opportunity: You don’t have Penelope Blossom (Nathalie Boltt) step-in as substitute teacher and not show her teaching more.
  • Bringing back Mrs. Grundy (Sarah Habel) is a choice but at least it doesn’t seem like the show is interested in another student-teacher affair. Also, any bets on whether we’ll get to meet her poet husband or whether he’ll be someone famous or made-up?
  • Smart Writing: Having Mrs. Thornton (Frances Flanagan) move to Greendale, after being accused of being a Communist. Of course the hometown of Sabrina the Teenage Witch (Kiernan Shipka) would be more welcoming to victims of a witch hunt.
  • Does Hermione (Marisol Nichols) bringing up Christmas mean we’re going to be getting a Christmas in July episode (or even a Katy Keene crossover, if the episode takes place in New York)?
