TV Review: ‘My Adventures with Superman’ Season 1, Episode 2

The second episode of My Adventures with Superman‘s two-part premiere gave fans more of a sense as to what kind of show it’s going to be. It has an undeniably anime look to its art, but that influence extends beyond its visual style. It also has an anime feel to its story and its characters. Lois (Alice Lee) and Clark’s (Jack Quaid) relationship is sweet, cute, and bubbly in a way that lends itself much more to anime than Western-style animation. Plus, the show has a very science fiction edge to it. And if the show continues on this path, it will be able carve its own niche for itself in the world of Superman adaptations.
After witnessing Superman save their lives, Jimmy (Ishmel Sahid) and Lois are determined to discover more about him. Realizing that they are right, Clark journeys home to finally learn the truth about his past. He meets a hologram of a Kryptonian, who he believes to be his father, but the hologram does not speaking English. Instead, Clark gets a vision of his past when he was placed in a ship and his home planet was destroyed. Clark then dons a Kryptonian suit and heads to Metropolis to help Lois. She continues her investigation into the missing weapons and finds herself in trouble. The episode ends as the weapons thief is taken into custody by a secret organization.
This episode was an improvements over the first as it expanded the world and its characters. Superman learned a bit about his past, but it wasn’t revealed completely. There may be more secrets and twists to uncover. Also, it appears as if the robber Lois was chasing is going to be the show’s take on Livewire. Plus, the inclusion of the secret organization opens up a whole other level of storytelling possibilities. It looks as if the series is going to tackle a lot of different aspects of Superman’s world at once. And given that it has embraced anime and sci-fi, there is definitely an opportunity for it to be something unique.
