TV Review: ‘What We Do In The Shadows’ Season 6, Episode 2

Like most situational comedy shows that feature a wide cast, there are multiple aspects an episode can focus on. In terms of What We Do in the Shadows, this can either be a progressing storyline that builds over the course of the season or simply seeing the vampires in Staten Island doing what they do best, which is act like idiots. The great thing about this show is that it can focus on both things at the same time. This episode is a great example of that as Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) continues trying to become a vampire while Nandor (Kayvan Novak) and Laszlo (Matt Berry) go off on ridiculous shenanigans.
The two vampires hang out with their guy friends in Staten Island for a night of drinking. By this point, their friends pretty much have mush for brains as they have been hypnotized by Nandor and Laszlo so many times over the years. Eventually, they go for a joyride in a cop car that results in a crash. They are all arrested, but the vampires and humans escape any sort of consequences just by hypnotizing all of the cops. Meanwhile, Guillermo goes to see the Baron (Doug Jones) in order to gain more insight into his strange, partial-vampire predicament — but even he is stumped, which adds further mystery to the situation.
And, of course, Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) had her own story line going where she visited a neighborhood several blocks over that was named after the Greek village she came from. This was more in line with Nandor and Laszlo’s plot line as it didn’t necessarily progress the show in any direction. But Guillermo becoming a vampire will probably be the main story thread for the season. Lazlo even discovered this later on in the episode, bringing him into the fold of Guillermo’s story arc. Laszlo will probably play a bigger role in what’s happening to Guillermo in future episodes. But all in all, the show is on the right track as it’s developing an engaging main plot line while still allowing its vampires to be as dumb as possible.
