Going At It Tooth And Claw: ‘Night Club’ #6 Advance Review

Mark Millar and Juanan Ramírez’s Night Club has managed to blend good ol’ fashioned exuberant superhero action and horror remarkably well across this whole run and with the final issue, out this week from image Comics, it continues to do this with gusto. Our newly-turned heroes now need to take on the gang of outlaw vampires with centuries of experience between them. That’s a tall order for a group of teens who are only just finding their feet and are all alone in the big, cruel world they now know to be filled with ghouls crawling in the shadows. It’s a double-seized issue, so there’s plenty of space to enthral and entertain reader with the bloody showdown that unfolds. 

We move from the more colourful world of the urban environment – the natural habitat of superheroes – into the more choleric colours of the rural, gothic countryside where our band of badasses are assembled. And then… all Hell breaks loose as our newborns think they have a cunning plan. But, do they when up against these ages-old vampires?

Night Club #6 is an all-out balls-to-the-wall action extravaganza with the usual twists and turns Millar likes to throw in during his closing acts, with pacey writing and bombastic, thrilling action. Ramírez’s art continues to convey so much of the emotions and confidence – and then lack of confidence – our heroes go through, even with masks on, through his deft body language and stances he pours into each character, while Fabian Mascolo shifts tones through his colour art to fit the mood.

It’s another big ending to a series that you can easily envisage as a TV series – which this series is destined to be at some point – with a cast of characters you can’t help but root for and who never say never. At times witty as well as wicked, Night Club has been a great hybrid of a series and a new take on superheroes I have enjoyed from start to finish, with the promise of much more to come.
