WebToon And WoTC Offer First Looks At ‘Brie And The Borrowed Blade’

My mother-in-law loves R.A. Salvatore‘s books. She has recently been reading through all of the Drizzt‘s books (yes, all of them), and it’s been a ton of fun for me because she texts me and asks questions. I read most of Salvatore’s Drizzt books when I was a kid but talking to adults about them was never in the cards in those days. Magic and fantasy were seen as foolish at best and evil at worst. Mention of them typically resulted in scorn, abuse, or some form of Satanic Panic so keeping my mouth shut was always the best path forward.

Now, getting to have this positive parental figure who enjoys the same books I do, and gets excited as she comes upon new plot points and wants to text me about them and ask about things like Mindflayers and The Sword Coast is a special kind of joy that I feel truly blessed to be able to experience. I now have this mom figure who makes sure I don’t need anything from the stor,e but also randomly texts me about the Champion of Mielikki and is genuinely interested in the things I am excited about because she is excited about them as well. It’s so cool.

All of that makes this announcement so much fun for me for so many reasons, and I am going to go extra hard on some lore bits because fans of this series are going to be so excited about what WebToon is cooking up with the fine folks over at Wizards of the Coast!

The delightfully delightful digital comics platform WebToon and ever-epic Wizards of the Coast have revealed the title and exclusive first look from their upcoming official Dungeons & Dragons webcomic collaboration!

The series, titled Brie and the Borrowed Blade, is written by Purpah with art by Ryan Maniulit and will star Brie, the daughter of R.A. Salvatore’s beloved D&D characters Drizzt and Cattie-brie.

The series will see Brie (or Breezy) “borrow”(that’s in quotes, friends, so something tells me that this is not exactly sanctioned by dear old dad) her father’s iconic sword, Twinkle, and embark on a journey to discover what it takes to be a hero.

You have no idea how excited I am about this. For those wondering what Twinkle is, it’s a super powerful magical scimitar that was given to Drizzt by Malchor Harpell in 1356 DR, when the Companions of the Hall were chasing Artemis Entreri after he had kidnapped their pal, the halfling Regis.

What is so cool about Twinkle is that it has a ton of features that will fit perfectly in the hands of a young adventurer. It has defensive abilities, it can send mild emotional pulses, it has a star-cut azure sapphire on its pommel that glows blue when it detects danger nearby. At some point, the blade got a Drow poison enchantment, allowing Drizzt to defeat his enemies with non-lethal tactics, making it a great tool for a young adventurer who may not want to deliver a killing blow to those she has to fight. If there ever was a weapon made for a young kid who goes off on an adventure, this is it.

Now, another cool little tidbit about all of this is Malchor Harpell, the gifter of the scimitar to Drizzt I mentioned earlier, survived the Spellplague after it struck the Realms in the Year of Blue Fire. His tower disappeared from the Neverwinter woods but he was alive further along in the story and competed with other archmages for the possession of the Lost Spell during a spellstorm after the events of the Spellplague.

Malchor had a really rad lurker cloak and was also a really well-known enchanter. So as I was looking at the concept art I saw there is a cloak-wearing wizard-looking character named Quillian Harpell. These things can’t be a coincidence!

Brie and the Borrowed Blade is slated to launch in 2024, with more details to be announced in the coming months and you can rest assured I will have all your updates as they break on this exclusive WebToon series!
