‘What We Do In The Shadows’ Season 5, Episode 5 Review

This week’s episode of What We Do In The Shadows felt a little slower than most. It was essentially divided into two segments, both revolving roughly around the same plot point. While it did move Guillermo’s (Harvey Guillén) overarching storyline forward a bit, the main plot of the season more or less stood still. Instead, this was an episode for the ridiculous vampires to wind up in ridiculous shenanigans over and over again. It also gave the audience a chance to understand what it’s like to be a vampire in a world of humans, even if it did so in the most absurdist ways possible.
After a water main break makes the local news in Staten Island, Nandor (Kayvan Novak) is seen being interviewed by a reporter. He accidentally outs himself as a vampire, which causes a huge panic in the manor. All of the vampires believe they will be run out of New York City and try to do everything in their power to stop that from happening. Various plots include killing the reporter, kidnapping the reporter, and even mind controlling all of New York City through the news. Meanwhile, Guillermo runs into issues with his own family as he feels he has to abandon them now that he is turning into a vampire.
Guillermo’s half of the episode is relatively uneventful. Instead, the highlight was seeing the vampires completely overreact to the situation with the news. By all accounts, the news never caught on to the fact that there were vampires in Staten Island. The water main break always remains the top story, that is until they were caught flying on camera. The hilarious part of this whole situation is that the vampires are incredibly powerful beings. They can fly, have super strength, and mind control humans. Yet they are absolutely terrified the mob threat humans pose. Seeing these all powerful vampires panic is the greatest part of this otherwise lackluster episode.
