The Devil Is Heaven Sent In September’s ‘Daredevil’ #1

Matt Murdock is dead. Elektra is still wearing the mask of the Kitchen’s Guardian Devil in his honor. But in September, that changes, as Daredevil #1 hits the stands.
There’s no denying that Daredevil may be the most consistently good ongoing series in the history of comics. Going back to at least the Frank Miller run, you can see incredible writers and artists like Miller, John Romita Jr., Ann Nocenti, David Mazzuchelli, Joe Kelly, Kevin Smith, Joe Quesada, Brian Michael Bendis, David Mack, Alex Maleev, Ed Brubaker, Michael Lark, Andy Diggle, Mark Waid, Michael Allred, Chris Samnee, Charles Soule, Ron Garney, and the current but eminently ending run. There’s no denying that is the single greatest line-up of creators in comic book history, and I know I left many names.
Though there’s still one issue left in Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto’s groundbreaking Daredevil series; we already know Matt Murdock’s fate. In the series’ next volume, that may change. Coming from Saladin Ahmed and Aaron Kuder, Matt Murdock is about to accept a calling from a higher power as the series’ newest volume begins.
Hitting stands on September 13, Daredevil #1 will reveal the shocking price Matt had to pay to escape the afterlife and the biblical consequences his freedom has unleashed on the world. A changed man in more ways than one, Matt has now embraced a new role in life while Elektra continues to defend Hell’s Kitchen as the Woman Without Fear. Elektra would like nothing more than to give Matt the peace he deserves and allow him to live the life he was seemingly destined for, but a new enemy has other plans. Matt’s reemergence has released an unholy threat and in order to stop it from preying on the souls of Hell’s Kitchen, Matt will have to become the devil once more and reckon with the deadliest of sins!
Ahmed is known at Marvel for his stunning Black Bolt series, and for an extended run on Miles Morales: Spider-Man. Though the latter was hit-and-miss with a lot of fans, that first series was a critical favorite, and showed that Ahmed could do some really unique and interesting things with familiar characters. Add to that Daredevil always seems to bring out the best in creators, and I think it’s going to be a hell of a run, no pun intended.
