Kickstarting Comics: ‘Blobby Horror’ — A Horror Zine Of Nightmarish Nostalgia

by Richard Bruton

For anyone growing up in Britain of a certain age, the words Mr Blobby will bring smiles and a certain creepy chill – Frisson Comics now bring you Blobby Horror:

A childhood-ruining cursed comics compilation in reverence of 90s TV idol Mr. Blobby.

Zine cover by Erika Price

Yes, Mr Blobby. Absolutely ridiculous, utterly weird, and strangely creepy back when he was all over our TV screens as a chaotic character. This was Mr Blobby…

And yes, he became a huge star, screams of ‘Blobby, Blobby, Blobby…’ – the terror was real.

Which brings us to Blobby Horror, a 68-page perfect-bound zine celebrating the strangeness – a “descent into the annals of a half-remembered childhood, one that was mostly happy but one that was also inhabited by… HIM.”

Art by Katie Whittle

It looks like exactly the sort of nightmarish fantasy that Blobby would inhabit, edited and curated by Tom Smith and Katie Whittle of Frisson comics of Liverpool and Erika Price.

They describe it as “a collection of cursed comics and illustrations from those whose sanity scarcely survived encounters with the Blobbed entity…”

Blobby Horror will be an A5sized 68-page perfect-bound zine in b&w and colour with horror comics and illustrations from 16 different artists and writers all keen to share their memories and twisted recollections of “this fondly remembered hellbeast.”

For me, it’s made essential by the inclusion of Sarah Gordon, a brilliant comic maker who knows a hell of a lot about making scary stuff – here’s a little of her work in Blobby Horror

And here’s a little more of what to expect…

Michela Cicconi

Luke Francis

Jake Parappa Hainey

Gareth A. Hopkins

Arfon Jones

Atticus Lee

Alan MacRitchie

Shane Melisse

Renata Mukhametzhanova

James Park

Jabe Jackson

Thomas Skews

Tom Smith – with another famous couple… The Chuckle Brothers…

Well, that should be enough to give you both nightmares and getting you pledging on the Kickstarter.

And now some page previews by Shane Melisse (top left) Michela Cicconi and Jabe Jackson (top right) Jake Parappa Hainey (bottom left) and Sarah Gordon (bottom right)

The Zine’s available in PDF and physical copies, there are limited edition A5 prints by Erika Price and Katie Whittle in glorious fluorescent pink and yellow…

There’s also the chance to pick up copies of Fragments of Flesh, another horror zine from Frisson Comics…

And then there’s a wooden Blobby pin designed by Katie Whittle

Yep, total nightmares, brilliant zines and comics. It can all be yours at Blobby Horror: A Horror Zine of Nightmarish Nostalgia – running on Kickstarter right now until Friday August 25th, 2023 11:59 AM BST.
