TV Review: ‘My Adventures With Superman’ Season 1, Episode 7 — Old Multiverse With A New Villain

This week’s episode of My Adventures with Superman felt distinctly different from the others. It didn’t build upon the plot line involving Task Force X or the trio’s budding career in journalism. Instead, it was the most sci-fi and fantastical episode yet involving a very classic Superman villain. It also gave a rather unique twist on a comic book trope that hasn’t really been seen too much. The main focus of this episode wisely centered on Clark (Jack Quaid) and Lois’s (Alice Lee) growing relationship as it evolves into a new phase. And it was nice that they had a chance to grow without having the hang-ups of the larger threat to Metropolis.
After Lois and Clark confessed their feelings for one another last episode, this installment sets up their first date. Unfortunately, it never happens as Mister Mxyzptlk (David Errigo Jr) and the mysterious Multiversal Council of Loises arrive to throw a wrench in the romantic plans. Mxyzptlk seeks to regain the full strength of his powers and the Lois council wants to stop him. Lois, Clark, and Jimmy (Ishmel Sahid) are able to escape this nonsense, but along the way, Lois discovers that not every version of Superman in every universe is good.
Although this episode departs from the larger plot line — which has been very interesting with its use of Deathstroke — it was still very entertaining and a treat for comic book fans. This version of Mxyzptlk is a huge departure from what fans are used to seeing and it is definitely a breath of fresh air. He is a great character and villain, so to see him portrayed with such an anime edge is refreshing. Multiverses seem to be all the rage these days, so it’s a little tiring that this episode focused on that. But instead of focusing on Superman, leaving those variants as brief Easter eggs, Lois was the main subject of the Multiverse in this story, which is also a departure from trope. All in all, this episode illustrated that even when the plot gets sidetracked, the show doesn’t fall in quality.
