‘Darksiders’ Brings A Little Chaos To Your Bookshelf With New Choaseater Bookends

In 2010 I was not exactly flush with cash. A new video game was not priority one when things like food and pooling rent with my roommates were rather important. I was being paid about a quarter of my value and doing the job of three people. Because of this, the titles I did pick up had to matter. They had to be something I was going to play over and over again.

I could not afford pizza delivery, so I didn’t get free demo discs that came with the pies (yeah, I am that many years old). There wasn’t really a way for me to test out what was coming, so I was super hesitant to pick anything up until my friends who worked at the various pawn shops posing as game stores across the land told me if it was actually good and worth my time.

This was the case for all games, save Pokémon titles and a little game called Darksiders.

You see, Darksiders had one thing going for it that up to that point, not a whole lot of other games could say. Joe Madureira was in charge of it. Well, he was at least in charge of the visual tone and look of the game and the storyline that accompanied it. Joe Mad had created one of my favorite works with Battle Chasers and when I saw a large protagonist wielding an even larger and more cursed-looking sword I figured this game was going to be something special.

I was, of course, right, and Darksiders is still one of my top three non-Pokémon video game franchises* of all time. I play Darksiders regularly and from the start of that game to the delightfully diabolical end every moment is pure joy. You chuck a burnt-out car at an angel then cut a demon in half with War’s weapon of choice, the great sword Chaoseater.

To my delight Dark Horse Direct and First 4 Figures are introducing their latest resin collectible, the Darksiders Chaoseater Bookends.

For those who have not played the game, Chaoseater is arguably the most powerful weapon of war in all of Darksiders as it is the main weapon of War, the personification of said idea, and one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

It looks like this bookend draws some inspiration from the fight with Straga, a giant demon mini-boss in the game, where you plunge Chaoseater into an eye-like portal in the back of his head.

My top three game franchises are Darksiders, Dead Space, and Elder Scrolls. War is probably my favorite video game protagonist and I really wish we had more content with him in it. I know why we don’t but I love that 11ft tall walking entity of destruction so much.
