Retro Look With A Modern Twist: Pinfinity Brings More D&D Pins To The Table

I’m an easy sell for me when it comes to D&D branded material. Being a survivor of too many moments in my youth where members of a deeply religious society destroyed anything non-religious so they could “prove how much they are dedicated to their gods,” I tend to really enjoy seeing things that were destroyed back then showing up in regular places like Target and Walmart. It means that on some level I won. At least, that is what I tell myself.

As we are existing in this golden age of TTRPG, there are some really cool companies out there doing some really fun stuff. One of those companies is Pinfinity, who have been putting out D&D and Magic the Gathering-themed pins with AR enhancements for a while now. Their newest offerings though have really caught my attention, as I am such a fan of the classic “Red Box” art and the retro vibe of the Basic Rules set and AD&D books.

They currently are offering some really epic Classic D&D-inspired pin collections that are AR-enhanced to add to the amusement of these delightful little treasures.

The limited Edition Starter Pin Set has a D20 Inside a Gelatinous Cube, “Red Box” Players Manual-inspired pin, and a classic black and white Lich that Glows in the dark. The Red Box is going to look sick next to all my other “Red Box” collectibles and my… well… “Red Box” player’s manuals, of which I have 9, and the glow-in-the-dark Lich really makes me smile.

Using the Pinfinity App there is also an AR-Enchanced Art Card within the collector’s box that is said to “add a layer of magic to your collection.”

I’m not sure what that means yet, but as soon as I find out I will let you know!

Pinfinintiy also has what they are calling a “Retro Dragon Pin” that looks to be inspired by D&D Basic Set 2nd Edition Rulebook from 1981 with the sorceress on the cover.

There is also a cool “Retro Beholder Pin” that glows in the dark and for sure captures the vibe of the classic monster manuals complete with hash marks to shade the bottom of its bulbous body.

There is also a Black and White D20 that glows in the dark and serves as an actual virtual dice roller if you are using the Pinfinintiy App. While I think most dice goblins have dice in their pockets 99% of the time there is something so profoundly charming about having a pin that can also double as a means to roll a d20. It feels very cyberpunk and I love functional accessories so this plays into that whole vibe in the best possible way.

All of these pins are really cool and if they show up at my door I will play with them and tell you how they function. For now, though the production pictures alone are enough to get me excited about the possibility of these things really living in that retro D&D space.
