Thrills, Kills And Daring Escapes: ‘Big Game’ #3 Review

10/10With only five issues in which to tell a story Mark Millar himself compares to the classic crossovers of yesteryear, you have to move fast. And fast he does as Millar once more gleefully and with abandon takes down some of his biggest creations from the past twenty years of building his shared universe in Big Game #3.
But in this issue we are at least given some hope. It would seem that no matter how clever the Fraternity think they are, there is still one lone hero who has outsmarted them. Although, by escaping one crisis she is immediately thrown into, arguably, an ever bigger crisis. Although, she is not alone. But, when you realise who else has decided to take up the challenge, you may fond yourself think how he could, given those with more have done so little. But then, you feel, this is going to be a series where the underdog will prevail. It’s just a matter of how they do that’s so fascinating to read.
What is disconcerting is that even now, in the face of the greatest threat the Millarverse has encountered, some stand idly by in the shadows, avowing not to get involved. But, surely they will? I am still holding out some hope that Millar has some great re-set planned. Otherwise, he’ll have to think very creatively moving forward, given the ever-growing bodycount in each issue thus far.
Pepe Larraz continues to excel as the artist of this series and it’s great to see his take on the many various heroes and villains of the Millarverse, with this issue including Huck, the Night Club vampires and more familiar faces. And a good few cruel but clever deaths too. With one in particular standing as a real low point for a global cabal of criminals that seem to show no mercy whatsoever. If you ain’t rooting for the good guys by the end of this issue, then you are dead to me! Millar certainly knows how to manipulate the readers’ emotions.
Big Game #3 is another thrill-ride of an issue with more jaw-dropping deaths, violent scrapes and death-defying escapes and out now from Image Comics.
