For the record yet again, Cullen Bunn has been part of my life for over half of it, and I consider him my family. He’s one of my favorite writers, storytellers, and sounding boards. His bag of tricks is deep and full of all manner of stories, but where he shines is the slow-burn backwoods horror that speaks to the places that time has not so much forgotten as tried really hard not to remember.

This offering from Cullen and his imprint Outer Shadows, part of Outland Entertainment, where yes, I’m the Game Director and COO (I have a lot of hats. It’s totally fine) is going to be the first book in a multi-book series for spooky kids and spooky kids-at-heart. While the book is suitable for middle-grade readers, Crooked Hills presents a supernatural tale that will entertain readers of all ages.

“Crooked Hills, Missouri, is a combination of many of the small towns in which I grew up,” said Cullen, “from Newton Grove, North Carolina, to Thayer, Missouri. (Thayer in particular helped to form a template for Crooked Hills.) Those towns were rich with interesting people and even more interesting legends and ghost stories. With Crooked Hills, I imagined sitting in the heart of a dark forest around a campfire, telling kids those kinds of spine-tingling ghost stories. So, it seemed to me that having a witch come back to life to kidnap kids and be eaten by a hell hound would scare the living daylights out of almost anybody. But in that nightmare, I also saw a chance to explore what happens when kids face their fears; to overcome them can be incredibly liberating and empowering.”

Until next time, this is where Cullen is at peak performance. He’s one of the best in the game, but this is where he really opens up. If you are even a casual fan of Bunn’s work, or horror in general, or have kids who like things with a bit of a bite, you will want to give this a go.
