Review: It’s Race Time In ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – The Scorpius Run’ #2

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – The Scorpius Run pits the Enterprise crew against other starships in the race of a lifetime – literally.

Win the race and Captain Christopher Pike and his team win back their ship and their freedom. Lose and they become slaves or worse of the evil Zephyx. While the premise for this limited series may not be the most original, writers Mike Johnson and Ryan Parrott have captured the excitement of the Paramount+ series while also mastering the voices of each crew member.

Johnson and Parrott have clearly studied the characters and understand not only what makes them tick but also how to make them sound like the officers from television. Pike commands the crew with ease a much-appreciated sense of humor but is quick to consult with his command team to make sure he’s correctly reading the situation. Navigator Erica Ortegas is the best pilot in the fleet, and likely the wittiest as well. Spock, who has been transported to a competitor’s ship is fascinated by the alien technology – and he seems to finally have found the clarity and balance he’s searched for.

Artist Angel Hernandez does a good job of capturing the look not only of the actors playing the crew but also the fantastical space race the Enterprise is participating in. The ships must navigate an asteroid field that threatens to destroy all the racers.

But Hernandez – aided with colors by Nick Filardi – really shines as he illustrates Spock’s journey on the alien ship. With the ship’s advanced technology, it’s easy to understand why Spock would be taken with the challenge of learning how to pilot the vessel. But looking into his eyes the first time he immerses himself in the ship, you realize this is going to be a big plot point down the road. That’s a real credit to Hernandez.

This race may just be getting started, but the excitement will last much longer.
