TV Review: ‘Ahsoka’ Season 1, Episode 8 — An Unfinished Ending

There were a lot of loose plot threads going into the final episode of Ahsoka. Unfortunately, the show wasn’t able to tie them all up and left the season very open-ended. Consequently, the final note felt off given just how excellent the rest of the season was. It had incredible action, plot developments, and fan-favorite moments. This episode went especially hard on the action and made it seem like a full-fledged Star Wars cinematic experience. By itself, the hour was fun and entertaining. But it’s hard to overlook just how unfinished it feels and how much story it left in the air.
The action begins as Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) sends TIE fighters to finally defeat Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) and her friends. The TIEs fail and Ahsoka, Sabine (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), and Ezra (Eman Esfandi) head towards the fortress. When inside, they encounter a squad of Stormtroopers. After slicing them down, the Great Mothers bring the Stormtroopers back to life in Star Wars‘s most zombie movie moment yet. The trio continue to fight their way to Thrawn’s Star Destroyer as it escapes, but only Ezra makes it on board. Ahsoka and Sabine try to pursue, but they are unable to reach the ship when it escapes. They are now stranded in a distant galaxy while Ezra reunites with Hera (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and, presumably, brings information about Thrawn’s return to New Republic.
What makes this show so great is the smaller moments. Of course, since this is Star Wars there are plenty of chances for big action set pieces and lightsaber duels. But there are also well-crafted characters with a lot of history. A scene as simple as the characters reminiscing about Kanan (from Star Wars Rebels) shows just how deep the lore goes and how prominently it’s displayed for fans. This is why Ahsoka has been so successful. It’s just a shame that the season ended with such a tease that won’t be resolved anytime soon.
