NYCC 2023: ‘Cruella De Vil’ Joins Dynamite’s Disney Villains Line

by Erik Amaya

Cruella De Vil is on the catwalk with her own Disney Villains series.

Dynamite announced Monday the launch of the new comic book, the next evolution in its line of titles focused on Disney stable of bad guys and gals. Charting Ms. De Vil’s latest romp is the writer/artist duo Sweeney Boo.

“I’ve always had a softer spot for villainous characters, not because of their intentions but mostly because I’d always be so curious about what brought them to be who they are,” she said in a statement. “I feel like they offer so many layers of personality, and someone who is not perfect is much easier to relate to. What makes Cruella, Cruella? What makes her snap? What makes her laugh? It’s a really fun thing to try to discover!”

Despite Cruella’s notoriety, Boo’s story questions whether or not she is a villain. Per the Dynamite press release, “her name has been dragged through the tabloids and her reputation in the world of high society is hanging by a thread. But nothing can hold Cruella back from the glory of glamor and adoration. That’s why she’s willing to do anything – anything! – to restore her stature in the eyes of her peers. But what if that involves stealing the royal family’s priceless jewels?” Okay, theft may not always be exemplar behavior, but it remains to be seen if a heist will clear her name of that infamous Dalmatian theft.

Joining Boo in chronicling this tale are artist Miriana Puglia, colorist Dearbhla Kelly and letterer Jeff Eckleberry. Providing covers will be Boo herself, alongside Joshua Middleton and Gretel Lusky. Additionally, an action figure variant cover will also be available for the first issue.

Disney Villains: Cruella De Vil #1 makes its ways to comic shops in December.
