Did ‘Workaholics’ Have A Premonition Of ‘The Righteous Gemstones’?

Weird things happen in show business from time to time when it comes to the timing and casting of certain roles. Some actors seemed destined to portray certain characters. Sometimes there are even hints or premonitions of what’s to come. Very rarely does this happen by chance. Actors often portray characters in skits or commercials that can then be expanded upon in future endeavors. But rarely does a single scene of a show serve as a preview of what’s to come. But that’s exactly what happens in the seventh episode of Workaholics ‘seventh season.

Titled “Tactoma 420,” the episode follows the show’s trio of main characters as they race their company’s new RC cars. Adam (Adam DeVine), who might be the dumbest member of the group, has a tough time getting his car in order. He rips it apart and is really struggling. One of his coworkers offers to help him by taking him to a place of guidance. Adam believes he’s going to get racing tips. Instead, his coworker takes him to a church service, which Adam immediately dismisses. But after being swayed by the pastor, Adam gets up on stage and actually does a bit of preaching himself and convinces the church’s choir to come with him to the race for support.

This is a fairly inconsequential scene. When it originally aired, fans of the show probably didn’t think much of it. But years later, it’s ironically serendipitous that Adam was featured in this scene given that he would go on to have a starring role in The Righteous Gemstones, a show about a family of preachers. In that series, Adam plays Kelvin, a pastor who specializes in youth groups. Despite the idiocy of the family, they are quite adept at preaching and rallying people. Seeing Adam DeVine take on this role in Workaholics, years before he would join The Righteous Gemstones, is a very odd foreshadowing that more fans of his should take notice of.
