Just The Specials — Trick Or Travesty: ‘Boo Batter’ From Cold Stone Creamery

I’m a fan of limited-time meals, holiday snacks, collaborative treats, and themed menu offerings. If there is a fun seasonal treat or an anime-themed candy bar I want to eat it. If there is a new taco shell or a chicken sandwich where the bread has been replaced with donuts, I want to eat it. There is something fun and thrilling about these special menu items and they tend to be the only time I try and eat at places I would typically not eat at on the regular.

Cold Stone is one of those spots that I only check out when they have something special on the menu. This year their Boo Batter Ice Cream was intriguing enough that it got me to shell out the UberEats delivery fees to try as we do not have a Cold Stone close to us and it had been a stressful week so I was in need of a little treat.

This Halloween-themed creation is made with M&Ms, Kit-Kat pieces, Orange Halloween Oreo pieces, and Boo Batter ice cream. Boo Batter is the traditional Cold Stone Cake Batter ice cream but colored jet black making the whole thing very striking in the promotional images.

This is what arrived 25 minutes after being ordered. Now, it’s totally expected that if someone is going to drive your food from the Cold Stone to your home that it’s going to get all melty, so there is nothing wrong with that. In a world where people bring food to your house from near and far the temp when it arrives is always going to shift dramatically based on the time of day, traffic, if they have the AC on in the car, and a bunch of other factors… but the melty ice cream was not really the issue with this one.

As you can see the colorful fun of the orange Oreo Cookie and the M&Ms was totally lost in this thick black Boo Batter ice cream. The Boo Batter clung to everything giving all the various Mix-Ins the same overly sweet almost chemical sugar flavor. It did not come off as cake batter in flavor as much as just artificial sugar sweet.

I was really looking forward to the normal quality ice cream creation I get from Cold Stone but this one was way more trick than treat as it left me sick to my stomach, my mouth stained black, and me feeling like I had wasted my money.

I will think twice next time Cold Stone offers something in the “batter” flavor profile going forward because this experience is not one I want to revisit any time soon.

Until next time, maybe eating it in-house would have changed something, but it was still firm and fairly solid when it arrived and everything was just kind of a mess. This is not something I would sit in front of a kid as it would probably stain them from head to toe.
