Welcome To Their Nightmare: ‘The Avengers’ #7 Reviewed

After defeating one of the biggest threats they’ve ever faced, you might think The Avengers might get a little time off. However, there’s no breaks for Earth’s mightiest heroes, as the latest threat comes on two fronts.

Jed MacKay, CF Villa, Federico Blee, and Cory Petit put Earth’s Mightiest face to face with unearthly menaces.

The greatest threat the Avengers have ever faced is sweeping across the globe. It’s already claimed the life of the Vision, and he won’t be the only Avenger to fall. Not everything is as it seems though, and thanks to that, two of the team are about to face a terrifying menace on their own.

The team really makes this one interesting. We start immediately with an incredibly unsettling sight. The Avengers are on their last legs, but something’s wrong. While MacKay writes the team at their best and most noble, despite the odds, Villa shows the reader that something’s wrong. I found myself guessing immediately what was happening. The Vision was white, Carol was in her original costume, T’Challa in his Marvel Knights design, Thor in his costume from the Crossing… Was it an alternate reality, the past, or something else?

And honestly when the actual villain was revealed, I grinned. It was the first time in a while the villain has shown up, and it made complete logical sense. He was threatening for the first time in a very long time, and it made the story better for it.

The large part of why this story works is Villa and Blee’s art. Villa doesn’t just put good designs on the page — he paces the action so it builds up to the reveal. He shows the characters’ emotions as they battle through the crisis. Blee brings it to gorgeous life with his colors, mixing the depth he adds with deepening the light and shadows. It’s really a fantastic-looking issue.
