Talking With Greg Weisman About ‘Gargoyles Quest’ And Demona

Writer Greg Weisman is one of the creators of Gargoyles (1994-1997). A few other things he is responsible for writing include Gargoyles: Dark Ages (2023) and DC Showcase: Green Arrow (2010). He is currently writing the mini-series Gargoyles Quest (2024-Present). Weisman will be teaming up with artist Pasquale Qualano on Gargoyles Quest. Also the first issue will see covers that include visuals from artists Clayton Crain and Jae Lee (with hues from colorist June Chung).
Benjamin Hall: Why the spin-off instead of a relaunch of Gargoyles as a series?
Greg Weisman: We have what we believe is a thrilling event story that we’re excited to tell. Then back to Gargoyles right after.
Hall: Will you be the sole writer for the foreseeable future of any Gargoyles comics?
Greg: Well, I certainly hope so. Guess that’s not my decision to make. But I’ll keep doing Gargoyles and the Gargoyles Universe for as long as they let me!
Hall: Are you worried or hopeful that some may mistake this series’ title for the video game Gargoyle’s Quest (1990)? Thereby affecting sales and/or word of mouth.
Greg: I honestly wasn’t aware of that video game until after we announced the mini-series. I hope there’s no confusion.
Hall: Does Demona being a magic user, and the franchise often having magic in other languages, mean that you will be continuing to insert non-typical languages? For example, you apparently use Catalan and Spanish in Gargoyles: Dark Ages #4 (2023).
Greg: We always strive for authenticity. Not saying we’re always successful, but we strive for it. That includes using the appropriate languages for any situation.
Hall: Since Demona is essentially immortal why does she not wait out her enemies’ lifespans? For example one would think Goliath and the clan’s eventual passing would give her an edge.
Greg: She’s patient but not THAT patient. She has certain plans, as we’ve seen, that are very long-term, slow-to-simmer schemes. But in the meantime, she might as well keep trying, right?
Hall: How do you feel working with artist Pasquale Qualano on this series?
Greg: I’m thrilled about it. Saw some of his work – literally just a few minutes ago – on the first issue, and I’m in love!
