Preview: ‘Judge Dredd: A Penitent Man’ Coming March 2024

by Richard Bruton

Coming March 2024, Judge Dredd: A Penitent Man brings an acclaimed trio Dredd tales following the life of an ex-Judge trying to make his way in the big city to one big collection.

Writer Ken Nieman and artist Tom Foster gave us a trio of great noir tales in ‘A Penitent Man’, ‘An Honest Man’, and ‘A Fallen Man’, showing us just how hard it can be for an ex-Judge who’s done his time on Titan to come back to Mega-City One. Now, in March 2024, all three tales get collected in one book.

It’s all about former Judge, Kyle Asher, who returns to MC-1 from the penal colony on Titan after serving twenty years. It’s a hard return, under suspicion from the start by the Judges, especially the SJS, the Judge’s own Internal Affairs division who seem to have an agenda to run him out of town.

Can there truly be such a thing as a penitent man in such a place as Mega-City One?

Across the three stories, with Dredd taking rather a backseat as we focus on Asher’s redemptive arc, Niemand and Foster tell a noir tale that’s been one of the more recent highlights of Dredd.

Here’s a little of the 2000 AD PR:

“Widely acknowledged as one of the best current writers on the legendary and long-running Judge Dredd, Kenneth Niemand is joined by artist Tom Foster, who since winning the 2000 AD talent search in 2013 has gone on to become a fan favourite with a style that combines the meticulous inking of Brian Bolland and the noir stylings of Howard Chaykin. ‘A Penitent Man’ is their modern classic, a brooding slow-burn rumination on justice, guilt and a system that can neither forgive nor forget.”
