Jumping On: Series Premieres, One-Shots, And New Story Arcs Kicking Off On November 29, 2023

One of the most frustrating things about finding new comics to read and enjoy is finding a good jumping on point. It can be confusing and disheartening to pick up a single issue from the middle of an arc without having the context of the previous chapters.

With that in mind, here are a few New Story Arcs, Series Premieres, and One-Shots that caught my eye for this upcoming New Comic Book Day, Wednesday, November 29, 2023.

BRZRKR: Fallen Empire #1, BOOM! Studios

Keanu Reeves, Matt Kindt, and Ron Garney did such a good job with the action packed first BRZRKR arc, I’m really looking forward to what the new team pulls out. I was really quick to dismiss this series as a placeholder for a film to come later down the line, but the first arc over-delivered and quickly made me a believer. It’ll be fun to see what Reeves is able to do as he is joined by new co-writer Mattson Tomlin, new series artist Rebekah Isaacs, and colorist Jordie Bellaire to tell new violent tales from B’s past.  

Cullen Bunn’s Body Bag #1, Massive Publishing

I’m always a sucker for a good Cullen Bunn horror, and there’s something about a polybagged secret project that I can’t get an early review copy of that piques my interest even more. Cullen Bunn’s Body Bag #1, the debut release of Overlook, introduces the world to four new creatures from the twisted horror scribe’s imagination. 

The Amazing Spider-Man Gang War: First Strike #1, Marvel

Spider-Man has always been one of my favorite franchises, and this prelude to Gang War looks really interesting. Zeb Wells and Cody Ziglar pen the script, artists Nick Lowe, Joey Vazquez, and Julian Shaw pull lines, Bryan Valenza provides the palette, and Joe Caramagna letters.  This is where it all begins. What incites the war?! Who hired Shotgun and took out Tombstone? What, if anything, can Spider-Man do about it?
