Review: Go For ‘Giant Robot Hellboy’ #1

Welcome to the table,

I was told there would be Hellboy and Giant Robots. I was not disappointed.

When the email hit my inbox, I had to triple check I was not being pranked by some talented designers and the fine folks over at Dark Horse Comics. My fandom of Mike Mignola‘s Hellboy Universe is the reason I returned to comics, and the amazing art of Duncan Fegredo is always a visual feast. Dave Stewart lends his color work to this project, and it gives the whole thing a really nice classic tone that ties into the earlier days of Hellboy’s adventures.

The setup is fun and goes quickly in this first issue. Hellboy is kidnapped and hooked up to a massive Hellboy mech, then unleashed on a lost island that is teeming with strange lifeforms. There is some kind of hidden base full of what I’m sure is going to be all manor of secrets and diabolical threats.

What I really dig about this whole thing is it was born out of  a random sketch from Mignola’s Quarantine Sketchbook. One really cool piece of art turns into a whole comic story that none of us knew we needed. But, as soon as it was announced I knew, as I am sure most fans of the Mignola-verse did, that I wanted it.

Giant Robot Hellboy is a 3-part miniseries. Hopefully, like other offerings from the world of Hellboy, this is not going to be the last time we see this mech in full effect.
