Previewing ‘Smash!’ #2: ‘The Spider’ Meets ‘Mad Max’

The second issue of the three-issue series sees things go from bad to worse for the King of Crime as the Spider finds himself on The Thirteenth Floor – and that’s never good!

The first issue of this great series saw Paul Grist crafting a tale across the ages, bringing some classic superheroes (or at least the sort of strange super types Brit comics always did so well) back for a caper that all started off with Janus Stark trapping a demon in a stone idol. From there, we jumped to the ’60s and The Spider planning a heist of the idol, a heist that went way wrong.

All of which brings us to 1985 and the start of this second issue, this time illustrated in fine style by Jimmy Broxton, where the King of Crooks finds himself taking refuge in a certain tower block…

Of all the tower blocks in the world, The Spider had to find himself in here with Max, the malevolent supercomputer who assigns all those he considers naughty to his Thirteenth Floor full of nightmares.

And if that wasn’t enough trouble, Robot Archie’s on the case for WorldPol and there’s also Tina Kelly, daughter of Tim Kelly, of Kelly’s Eye, another classic character of Brit comics past.

It’s a hell of a lot of fun in here, Grist seamlessly bringing in the characters in a thrilling heist tale, all building up to next month’s finale.

SMASH! #2 is already out, released on 29th November and available through all fine comic shops, or at least it should be.
