Advance Review: Lots Of Actions Though Few Answers In ‘Phantom Road’ #7

No one reading Phantom Road #7 is going to complain about a lack of action. The book is packed with monster bashing, a kidnapping flashback, and a big bear mascot.

But if you’re looking for answers – what is really happening with Dom and Birdie in this other world, what’s the story behind FBI Agent Theresa Weaver’s childhood trauma, who is the dude wearing Hawaiian shirts, and why is there a giant bear in the story – you’ll have to wait a while longer. This isn’t even a case where answers to old questions beget new ones. There are simply new questions layered upon new questions.

That doesn’t make Jeff Lemire’s script any less enjoyable. The issue breezes by, and Lemire and illustrator Gabriel H. Walta have earned plenty of good will in most readers’ minds. Phantom Road is clearly a series that’s in it for the long haul, which is approximate since two of the main characters are mysteriously tasked with transporting a monster egg across the country. So if you’re not interested in peeling this onion of a story, best to get out now.

Those who are left may not get answers for a while, but they will be treated to an improved story. The series started off too slowly but has recovered nicely thanks to this talented creative team. Walta’s somewhat unrefined style fits in well here, particularly in the real world where Theresa is having an unexpected – and, of course, unexplained – breakdown in diner bathroom.

Jordie Bellaire’s colors are mainly subdued, particularly in the other world with Dom and Birdie. It’s almost as though there’s a film over those pages, giving it a vastly different feel from the real world’s more vibrant hues.

There is plenty to love here. So if you don’t mind being kept in the dark as the story eventually unfolds, you’re likely to be in for a real treat from some great creators.
