Take A Trip To The 90s With Marvel’s ‘X-Men ’97’ Prequel Series

Like all things, the 90s have come back in style with force and Marvel Comics is ready to join that trend. As Disney+ prepares to launch X-Men ’97, the long-awaited sequel to the 90’s hit X-Men: The Animated Series, the comics division is kicking 2024 off with a prequel series.
X-Men ’97 is a 4-issue series written by Dead X-Men and Dark X-Men writer Steve Fox, featuring art from X-Men ’92: House Of XCII artist Salva Espín. The duo previously worked on the aforementioned X-Men ’92 series. Their latest series, created in conjunction with the TV series showrunners, will focus on what the beloved cast (Wolverine, Rogue, Jubilee, etc) has been up to since the series came to a cliffhanger ending in 1997.
Foxe shared his excitement about the new series with Marvel.com, saying “There’s a very good chance I wouldn’t be writing comics today if not for the impact X-Men: The Animated Series had on me as a kid–heck, the voice actors from the show are still the voices I hear when I read the comics today!”
The writer also spoke about reuniting with Espín, saying “Getting to reunite with my X-Men ’92: House of XCII collaborator Salva Espín on this official prelude to X-Men ’97 has felt like a bucket-list project a lifetime in the making.” While also praising the X-Men ’97 TV team (including showrunner Beau DeMayo) for giving them “a fantastic runway to come up with our own original tale that feeds right into what viewers will get to experience in the new season.”
Launching on March 27th, the series will feature a cover from Todd Nauck on the first issue.
