Jumping On — Series Premieres, One-Shots, And New Story Arcs Popping Off On January 10, 2024

by Brendan M. Allen

One of the most frustrating things about finding new comics to read and enjoy is finding a good jumping on point. It can be confusing and disheartening to pick up a single issue from the middle of an arc without having the context of the previous chapters.

With that in mind, here are a few New Story Arcs, Series Premieres, and One-Shots that caught my eye for this upcoming New Comic Book Day, Wednesday, January 3, 2024.

Featured Series Premieres, One-Shots, and New Story Arcs:

Super Scouts #1, Comics Experience Publishing

I don’t have a lot of info on this offering from CEX, but… it sounds a lot like a Power Rangers take on Galaxy Quest (which was a Star Trek take on ¡Three Amigos!). Washed up actors from a super sentai show discover that their show was based on a real intergalactic war. To save the universe, they need to become the heroes they used to pretend to be. New concept? Not sure if Super Scouts will lean harder into the Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass or Becoming The Mask, but from the solicit, it should be interesting whichever route the creative team takes.

Deer Editor #1, Mad Cave Studios

You know I’m a sucker for the weird shit. Mad Cave’s newest offering has a John Doe slaying that lures a journo into a world of political intrigue. Bucky is the crime beat editor at “The Truth.” He’s also a deer. Because of course he is. Aimed at fans of Blacksad and Chinatown,  they’re calling this new genre ‘antler noir.’

Rebel Moon: House of the Bloodaxe #1, Titan

A comic book prequel to the Netflix film Rebel Moon, Titan pulls in writer Magdalene Visaggio and artist Clark Bint to bring prequel series Rebel Moon: House of the Bloodaxe. As war looms on the planet Shasu, the Bloodaxe family’s leader is conflicted between his father’s domineering legacy and maintaining peace. Conflict abounds.
