Dynamite Announces Classic ‘Gargoyles’ Comics Kickstarter

Dynamite is making good on their plan to bring classic Gargoyles back into print.
The company announced Thursday the start of a Kickstarter campaign to help boost the reprint collection and celebrate the 30th anniversary of the animated series debuting on television. Bound into three volumes, Gargoyles: The Classic Years assembles the 11-issue Marvel comics series and the subsequent Gargoyles and Bad Guys titles from SLG Publishing and CreatureComics.
The initial Marvel series, published in 1995, was written by Martin Pasko and Mort Todd with Amanda Conner, Grant Miehm, Alberto Saichann, and Jimmy Palmiotti making various artistic contributions. Joe Madureira also provided a cover to the debut issue. It told a tale set somewhere between the first two seasons of the animated series and have never been collected in full before. The SLG series, which ran from 2006 to 2009, was written by Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman and drawn by a variety of artists. It carried on the tale from the animated series, but the latter part of that run, and the accompanying Bad Guys title, were only released in digest-sized paperback collections. At this point, those earlier collections, the individual issues, and the Marvel series are pricey items for fans to track down on the secondary market.
“I’m honestly thrilled that these three volumes will finally give Gargoyles fans easy access to these great stories, including the canon SLG tales!” Weisman said in a statement. “I think the Dynamite Kickstarter is a great way for Gargoyles fans to get the word out and to reserve their copies.”
Naturally, the campaign offers a variety of options for Gargoyles fans from standard hardcover or paperbacks versions of the collection volumes, deluxe hardcovers with signed pages tipped in, and the “Gargoyles 30th Anniversary Premier Editions” — limited to 1000 copies each. Add-ons include lithograph prints of Jae Lee and Amanda Conner’s covers from Dynamite’s Gargoyles #1, a “deluxe signed and remarqued giclée print” of Lee’s Gargoyles art, facsimile editions of the first issue with “gold or purple foil stamping,” sketch covers, and the opportunity to commission art from Lee. Additionally, “collector packs of variant cover sets or premium limited editions and metal covers” can be added to the prospective pledge.
