Apparently more than 300 years ago in Wales, the tradition of carving spoons for your lover was an actual thing. Sailors would spend their free time carving these intricate wooden spoons called love spoons and then present them as tokens of affection to those they loved.
The loved ones, mostly romantic partners, would cherish these spoons as they served as both a romantic gift and, in many cases, a marriage proposal. The spoons even had their own kind of folklore shape language where the iconography was carved, Each symbol intricately carved into these spoons supposedly carried its meaning. A horseshoe would mean luck, diamonds would mean good fortune and an anchor would mean a wish to settle down.
