Mondo Announces Tony Stella ‘Godzilla Minus One’ Poster

Comicon Editor-in-Chief Erik Amaya typically doesn’t respond to movie posters. It is as much his own weird aesthetic quirk as it is the trend of movie poster marketing since the late 1990s. But Mondo’s upcoming Godzilla Minus One poster by Tony Stella is one of the great exceptions, as he explains below:
Yeah, I’ll be honest. Movie posters have just not been all that thrilling in the last 25 years or so. They tend to be Photoshop collages that speak more to contractual obligations for the starring talent than the grand artistic expressions of earlier eras. Mondo, though, has done a great job over the years presenting vintage films like Star Trek: The Motion Picture, RoboCop, and more. But I have to admit that Tony Stella’s poster for the most recent Toho Godzilla film is something else.
As you can see, it is evocative of the original 1954 Godzilla and the current aesthetic. The color scheme reminds me of the excellent cover for the Criterion Collection Blu-ray release of that film while the Japanese text also offers a big, authentic vibe. Then there’s the figure of Godzilla itself: powerful and imposing. Combined with the clocktower in the foreground, you can almost hear the Godzilla theme as the King of the Monsters tramples another metropolitan area. The whole thing just shouts the back-to-core-principles feel of Godzilla Minus One in all the right ways.
