Advance Review: Daniel Warren Johnson’s ‘Transformers’ #5 Continues To Impress With Bombastic And Beautiful Action

As a self-confessed fan of the Transformers, writer/artist Daniel Warren Johnson certainly knows what fans want and delivers it up by the bucket full in Skybound’s Transformers #5. Opening up on a clever series of panels cutting between Optimus Prime in the present and Sparky in the past, with both mirroring the other to better emphasis a connection through combat, we soon get down to the requisite balls-to-the-wall action sequences, so full of filth and fury, that this series has quickly become synonymous with. As fits a new shared universe like the Energon Universe, built on foundation of battle action. 

Along the way we get introduced to more Transformers to swell the numbers and thereby creating even more big-ass action sequences Johnson brings to life on the page through a sensational swirl of speed lines and artwork that effectively incorporated sound effects to suggest the grand magnitude of the smackdown that plays out over this issue.

And with the action only getting bigger in scale, we also get a huge surprise guest appearance once again that transfer fans will be thrilled to witness. And no, it’s not Megatron.  He’s coming, but you can’t play your hand too early. As this issue shows. There’s a whole toy box of robots in disguise to delve into ahead of his arrival.

Adding even more energy to the large scale cinematic-sized action is Mike Spicer who’s colours, particularly in the drawn out brutal battle between the Autobots and Decepticons, really helps illuminate the explosive encounter and crunching gears of Johnson’s grandiose combat sequences.

This newest reiteration of a childhood classic continues to make waves and in Transformers #5 we have another sensory overload that will keep you gripped from cover to cover. Big, brash and beautiful! And out from Wednesday 14th February from Skybound/Image Comics
