Review: ‘Gargoyles: Dark Ages’ #6 Sees No End

Writer Greg Weisman provides a mostly strong script with a good variation on the “just the beginning” type ending. The only legitimate problem is a lack of transition to one scene near the end of the issue.

Artist Drew Moss is responsible for the interior art as well as covers G and I. Moss goes big on a lot of panels to increase the sense of action. Although certain minimalistic details look like Moss is rushing things the majority of the art is fantastic. The inks are also very noticeably confident and near perfect in execution. Overall Moss does a stellar job with this final issue. As for covers G and I they hint at this issue’s plot, and have a decent sense of depth.

Letterer Jeff Eckleberry does a great job using differing fonts and sizes to suggest various vocal volumes and characterizations. Eckleberry also does a great job assisting the visual pacing with the placement of the text.

Colorist Martina Pignedoli does a beautiful job on the interiors. In particular creating a dark night for a setting that feels realistic and yet adheres to the cartoonish nature of the franchise.

Cover E is by artist Erica Henderson. It is a rather decent close-up of Demona from a worm’s eye view with some flame effects.

Variant covers B and L are the creations of artist Alan Quah. The image for these covers has a fantastic sense of depth and an interesting color palette.

Artist Clayton Crain is responsible for covers A, M, and N. While the design is overall good, the lack of trade dress on covers M and N makes them feel more like posters.

Covers F and H are action figure art variants by artist Jeff Parker.  There is some nice depth and texture to both images, but certain details (such as the background) could arguably be better.

Artist Jae Lee is the creator of the image on covers C and J. Although the visual effect is great the proportions of Demona’s arms look too thin in comparison to the rest of her.

The variant covers D and K feature an image by artist Kenya Danino. This image is a too crowded group shot with an overly dark color palette.
