Marvel Celebrates 40 Years Of Spider-Man’s Black Costume With New Variant Covers In May

by Tony Thornley

Forty years ago, one of the biggest changes in comics history happened in Secret Wars. To celebrate, Marvel is releasing a new line of variant black costume covers featuring their greatest heroes and villains.

Spider-Man’s black costume is one of the greatest and most well-known changes in comics history. In addition to being a striking change to a beloved character, the later reveal that the costume was actually a living being led to the creation of Venom, and decades worth of stories with the anti-heroic Lethal Protector.

Across 23 covers through the month of May, some of Marvel’s greatest artists will be giving their most iconic characters striking new black and white costumes. Each cover gives a glimpse at a world and asks what if these heroes were given the dark symbiote suit.

Check out the first 9 of these covers and watch for them in your local comic shop this May on all your favorite Marvel Comics.
