WonderCon 2024: Magma Comix Talks Upcoming Titles And New Darick Robertson Creator Owned Series

Magma Comix is a new publisher that began as a partnership with Heavy Metal Magazine, but has now spun off into its own independent company. They specialize in original genre fiction for adults, and they pride themselves in helping honor a creator’s vision by any means. During WonderCon 2024, they held a panel to introduce readers to their upcoming titles. In attendance were founder Denton Tipton, Editor-in-Chief Bobby Curnow, and creators Eamon Winkle, Jackson Lanzing, Colin Kelly, Steve Orlando, and Darick Robertson. 

Orlando opened up about his urban science fantasy, The Scale Trade, which is illustrated by Megan Huang — they also talked to our own Rachel Bellwoar about the book. It will release on May 1. Lanzing, Kelly, and Winkle also discussed their brutal, intense dark fantasy, Principles of Necromancy, out April 3. We will also have an interview with them about the comic later this week.

In addition to being Magma Comix’s founder, Tipton also writes stories. He works with artist Rámon Bunge on Hell’s Half Acre. It’s a sunset western set in 1905 Nashville where a US Marshall comes out of retirement for one last hurrah. There are supernatural elements and the other main characters are a mysterious gambler and the daughter of a madame who works at a brothel as its piano player. 

Another series, arriving April 10, is Silicon Bandits from writer Jason Starr and artist Dalibor Talajić. It’s a sci-fi crime heist story pitched as Ocean’s 11 meets Blade Runner. The story follows two programmers of AI androids who are fired from their company. Disgruntled, they reprogram all the robots and turn them into bandits.

Announced at the panel is a new series from Robertson entitled Greaser. He couldn’t share too many details, but the creator best known for his artwork on influential books such as The Boys, Transmetropolitan, and Happy! will write Greaser with Stephen B. Jones providing the art.
