‘Space Ghost’ #1 Passes 67K Copies Ordered

The launch of Space Ghost continues to reach for the stratosphere.
Dynamite announced Tuesday, with final orders coming in, that Space Ghost #1 has crossed the 65K copies ordered line with a final tally of 67,135 units — more than double the copies on order prior to the FOC date over the weekend. The series, from writer David Pepose and artist Jonathan Lau, takes the character back to its more-serious roots and is the latest part of Dynamite’s continuing relationship with Warner Bros. Discovery following ThunderCats and continuing with a new Jonny Quest comic book later this year.
As the series begins, greed and corruption reign supreme where the Galactic Federation is spread too thin to enforce the laws. Pirates, hijackers, and others move with stealth to take by force what they cannot gain by legitimate means. Colonies, science installations, and the vehicles ferrying personnel and resources between them are not safe. But the rogues of the galaxy will soon face a vigilante who takes the whole of space as his patrol: Space Ghost. Is he policeman gone rouge? An Alex Toth figure come to life? The manifestation of his sidekicks’ dream of heroism?
All of that is moot as Space Colony Omicron, home of brilliant scientist Dr. Jerrod Keplar, is attacked. His children, Jan and Jace — and their monkey Blip — are also threatened. Only Space Ghost can come to their aid.
“The cartoons were immensely stylish and a heck of a lot of fun, but they never had the time to develop those characters beyond their powers and the roles they played in each episode,” Pepose said when the series was first announced. “So we’re taking those classic vibes and using them as a starting point to dig even deeper into the characters than the original cartoons were ever able to.”
Dynamite also released a trailer illustrating the writer’s point and highlighting Lau’s take on the Toth-designed characters, who debuted in the 1960s Hanna-Barbera cartoon.
Space Ghost #1 is slated for release in May.
