Projekt Cars’ ‘Spawn’ Mustang Build, Featuring Art From Todd McFarlane

Projekt Cars is a professional automotive marketing organization established in 1994 to modify cars that showcase and provide exposure for various companies making top of the line automotive aftermarket products. Their diversity in project customs range from off-road, to exotic, to muscle platforms. Projekt Cars promotes these builds at around thirty automotive events each year throughout the Southwest, including the world-famous SEMA in Las Vegas.

The number of their projects that have been displayed at SEMA is a source of great pride over at Projekt Cars. The annual show is the pinnacle of the aftermarket automotive modification industry. Having one (or several) cars on display at the event is a huge boon to builders. Projekt Cars’ Business Development Director Carlos Molina is honored by the fact that the crew has had over 300 cars displayed at the expo.  

One of the displayed vehicles of particular interest to us here at Comicon is a Ford Mustang GT, built in partnership with Todd McFarlane and Guy Caldwell of Garage FX. McFarlane is known for his work at Marvel and DC, but is best remembered for creating the dark antihero Spawn, which is the franchise that inspired Molina and Caldwell for this build.

“I first started collecting Spawn when I was in college,” said Molina. “It was my distraction from Engineering classes. The dark side of the comic appealed to the oculus nature of my Scorpio sign. Fast forward 25 years, and I met Guy Caldwell from Garage FX, who liked my concept of a Deadpool GT350 that we built for SEMA 2015.  We talked for weeks and devised a plan to create the Spawn Mustang.”

Originally conceptualized for Amazing Comic-Con Las Vegas, the project was several years in the making. Having had some licensing issues very early on in their comics themed builds, Projekt Cars wanted to make damn sure they had all their permissions lined up. After approaching McFarlane’s camp with the idea, they waited an entire year before hearing back. At this point, McFarlane had not only agreed to the build, he offered to illustrate and supply the artwork that would eventually adorn the Mustang’s wrap. 

“That was really special to us,” says Molina.

The Spawn Mustang made its public debut at Amazing Comic-Con Las Vegas 2017. McFarlane, who was in attendance as a guest of honor, loved the finished product, and even enthusiastically got into the driver seat to check everything out. 

There is more to these customized hell-rides than just printed wrap, chains and airsoft guns. The Mustang hits eight hundred horses with a Whipple supercharger, gear cover, inlet, drive, billet elliptical blade, throttle body, Hi-Flow Fuel Rail, and carbon fiber intake and intake cover. The headers and performance catalytic converters come from Kooks. It has an Xforce cross pipe and exhaust, DeatschWerks injectors, K&N intake filter, Ford Racing chrome engine covers, Mishimoto coolant reservoir, hoses, and performance fan, and a Stett oil cooler system, among other engine upgrades. 

The suspension system includes KW Suspension variant 3-way coilovers, Eibach front and rear sway bars, GForce performance half shafts and driveshaft, and Powerflex control bushings. 

The exterior is completed with front and rear bumper, side skirts, front splitter rear valence, and quarter window cover by Air Design. It has a ton of carbon fiber elements, including the hood, trunk, side-skirt add-ons, mirrors, upper and lower grilles, and fog light bezels by Carbon Creations. Now’s where it gets really fun. Mutoh USA provided the wrap, which was custom designed by the Spawnfather himself, Todd McFarlane. 

The Spawn theme continues in the vehicle’s Roadwire-installed interior of white leather and black suede. Recaro race seats are featured with NRG 6 point harnesses and harness bars. There’s a carbon fiber steering wheel and multi-piece dash with a body-matched painted center console. 

Purely ornamental are the weapons, including an assortment of gatling guns, missiles, and crew-served weapons supplied by Old Craft Creations. Diode Dynamics supplied an array of lighting which is controlled via an sPOD.

Since the creation of the Spawn Mustang, four other Spawn-themed vehicles have been built by Projekt Cars; a Ford GT350, a Wide-Body Mustang GT, a Son of Spawn Honda CRz, and a Violator Hunter Jeep. All the vehicles make their rounds at various car shows and comics conventions across the country.
