Family, Belonging, Betrayal, And Justice — ‘Aster Of Pan: The Source’ Now Live On Backerkit
by Brendan M. Allen
Magnetic Press has launched a Backerkit campaign for Aster Of Pan: The Source from author and illustrator Merwan with an exclusive variant cover painted by Peach Momoko.
War. Plague. Famine. Death.
Fontainebleau forest in 2068 is the ancient home of some of France’s mightiest monarchs, on the outskirts of what was once Paris. The metaphorical horsemen had a field day with humanity, driving civilization to ruin before they could even make it to the next century.
The post-apocalyptic society of Pan now survives by growing rice and scavenging the wreckage of their destroyed civilization. Their precarious existence comes under threat when the powerful, technologically advanced Federation of Fortuna forces them into a dangerous choice. They must submit to Fortuna’s rule or best them in a competitive sport known as Celestial Mechanics.
Pan’s only hope is a hot-headed outcast named Aster they’ve rejected for being too “un-Pan.”

“We fell in love with Merwan’s work when we first encountered it in French,” said Magnetic Press Publisher Mike Kennedy. “Aster of Pan, originally titled “Mechanique Celeste,” was unlike anything we had seen before, evoking the dynamics of Akira with the expressiveness of The Long Halloween but with painted watercolor textures simply defies comparison. We were proud to publish several other books by Merwan since but Imagine our excitement to return to the world of Pan and that family of beloved characters in The Source… it’s a post-apocalyptic future we love spending time in!”
