A long time ago, in a comic shop far, far away, the really rad daughter of the owner got invited on a date to see Star Wars: The Phantom Menace in theater on opening night. After receiving the invite she immediately turned to me and invited me to go with her and the guy that invited her.
I was excited, I love Star Wars and have been a fan for as long as I could remember. The guy seemed upset, but it would take me a few years to realize I had become the third wheel in this situation. It did not even dawn on me as she asked me to sit between them and hold the popcorn. I cheered with the theater full of other fans as Jedi clashed with Sith and the new Darth Maul character busted out a double-bladed lightsaber on screen for the first time.
Star Wars was more than a story, it was a celebration, and it makes total sense to me that during my lifetime the celebration of May 4th has taken the place in pop culture that it has taken. There are specialty drinks at bars, deals on games and movies, and companies that really speak to the fandoms of the world, and do really cool things to join in on the fun.
