Rebellion Want To Make You A Romantic Proposal With ‘Roxy’ – Kickstarting Soon

Another major publisher dips their feet into the crowdfunding poll as Rebellion announces its first-ever Kickstarter for Roxy – an all-new romance comic.

Since Rebellion acquired the extensive archives of British comics, they’ve done a grand job in both reprinting so many incredible comics, whether those are much-loved and much-praised high-profile books or undiscovered and lost gems, and in making all-new comics featuring modern reimaginings of classic characters. And it’s been a pleasure to cover all of these here at Comicon.

Well, the extensive archive includes a whole host of simply beautiful romance comics, packed with artwork from some of the greats and definitely coming under the undiscovered gem category. One of those old romance comics is Roxy, launched in 1958 and running for 288 weekly issues.

And Roxy is also the latest reimagining from Rebellion, featuring a stellar line up of creators all giving us their own particular spin on romance in comics – that list includes Alex De Campi, Erica Henderson, Magdalene Visaggio, Sterric, Sarah Gordon, Nadia Shammas and Jaws Stone. The 80-page anthology, in softback, hardback, and digital, features four modern tales of romance and has covers by Hannah Templer, Marguerite Sauvage and Tula Lotay.

We’re promised:

“a brand new supermodel heist thriller from Dracula, Motherf**ker power couple Alex de Campi and Erica Henderson; a spirited walk in the undead woods from artist writer Sarah Gordon (Vicious Creatures); a trip back in time to the regency era from GLAAD & Eisner-nominated writer Magdalene Visaggio and Sterric (De Vloek van Rood); and a futuristic romance between man and mech courtesy of Nadia Shammas (Squire, Ms. Marvel) and Jaws Stone (Dames Zine: Magical Knights)”

Now, as anyone who has any knowledge of the history of romance comics will tell you, it’s a comics genre rich in creativity and wonder, packed with style and flair, and something that can truly expand the readership. And that’s exactly what Rebellion are trying here, which is why it’s not also a new comic but Rebellion’s first-ever Kickstarter.

When big companies start publishing on Kickstarter, many question why it’s needed – well, for Rebellion and Roxy, it’s no doubt all about the exposure and the different market that Kickstarter affords. Way more eyes will be on Roxy this way than if they were to release it through newsstands and/or comic shops for sure. And most importantly, a completely different set of eyes, including so many who look for something different in their comics.

So it’s a really smart move for Rebellion to do things this way, and with a creator list that promises so much, I really can’t wait to see what they’ve come up with.

The pre-campaign page is live already with the Kickstarter campaign going live on Monday 3rd June and running through the month. They’re promising “a host of exclusive rewards, merch, and surprises for backers” and that “Roxy is guaranteed to leave you gasping for air!”
