Karen S. Darboe Contributes Interconnecting Covers For ‘Powerpuff Girls’ And Interiors For Issue #2

Artist Karen S. Darboe is lending her talents to Dynamite’s Powerpuff Girls.
The company announced Monday that Darboe will contribute three interlocking covers for issues #1-3 (above) depicting the titular heroes and antagonists HIM, Sedusa, and (of course) Mojo Jojo. Darboe will also provider interior art for the second issue as the series, written by Kelly Thompson, will feature a different artist in each installment. Paulina Ganucheau takes on the debut issue while Miriana Puglia comes onboard for the third.
“This project has to be one of my all-time favorites I’ve taken part in!” Darboe said in a statement. “Being usually oriented to a more realistic style of drawing made this project quite challenging since I was faced with something on the total opposite of the spectrum. I really wanted to honor this fun series I grew up with which, on the top of everything, brought me closer to my two longest standing friends I used to play with! In fact, as soon as the first cover was revealed, I immediately sent it to them remembering the good old days when we wanted to be super heroines like Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup!”
The series will tell new tales of the Cartoon Network animated classic. As in the original program’s premise, the book will follow Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup. The three young girls were given extraordinary powers when their father/inventor, Professor Utonium, added Chemical X to the building blocks of their structure. Since that time, the girls are sworn fight evil where ever it may appear, although it often appears near their doorstep in the city of Townsville.
“I have to say, I am a very big fan of The Powerpuff Girls,” Thompson said previously. “So much so that when I was young — just out of art school — I even wrote a few short stories and began to storyboard them in hopes I could get a job on the show! So this just feels… exactly right. I was over the moon to get the offer.”
In addition to Darboe’s covers, the series will also feature cover art from Ganucheau, Leonardo Romero, and Nicoletta Baldari.
Powerpuff Girls #1 hits stores in July with the Darboe-drawn issue #2 landing this August.
