Jumping On — Series Premieres, One-Shots, And New Story Arcs Kicking Off On May 29, 2024

One of the most frustrating things about finding new comics to read and enjoy is finding a good jumping on point. It can be confusing and disheartening to pick up a single issue from the middle of an arc without having the context of the previous chapters.

With that in mind, here are a few New Story Arcs, Series Premieres, and One-Shots that caught my eye for this upcoming New Comic Book Day, Wednesday, May 29, 2024.

Hellverine #1, Marvel

Benjamin Percy and Julius Ohta team up for Hellverine’s first ever solo series. I have to be honest. I’ve never heard of Hellverine. This is a crossover I never would have imagined. Knowing nothing at all about this character, I’m sold on that cover.

The story brings Hellverine back to the streets, but will he be slashing his hellfire claws for good or evil? The launch of the new series also introduces the Hellfire Warriors.

Godzilla: Mechagodzilla 50th Anniversary #1, IDW

For 50 years, the King of the Monsters (Not King Kong. The other one.) has gone toe to toe with its robotic doppelgänger, Mechagodzilla. An intrepid reporter profiles the history of Mechagodzilla and its creator before the launch of the newest model. He finds himself entangled in a much deeper conspiracy. 

I’ve always found Mechagodzilla delightfully weird, which is a perfect fit for delightfully weird writer Rich Douek who teams up with artist Andrew Griffith.

Speaking of delightfully weird…

In this futuristic dark comedy by writer Mark Russell, artist Vladimir Krstić-Laci, and colorist Marco Lesko, life and death are ruled by social media. One too many dislikes…and you’re dead. When Arnold awakes from a coma twenty years into the future, he discovers that society is now ruled by social media. Enough “likes” and “upvotes” can unlock fame and fortune but watch your step! Enough “thumbs down” clicks and the collar around your neck explodes.
