Lawless Comic Con 2024: The Swag

I’m not one to weigh myself down at cons anymore with bags full of merch, but I do love an original piece of art. What I did not expect, in my wildest dreams, was the Superman piece I’d seen artist Chris Weston post on his socials a week or so ago. I had assumed it was a commission and very nearly reached out to him to ask about prices and maybe doing a similar piece. But, I didn’t need to as he has this at the show along with original pages from his recent work on 2000 AD too.

Thinking that would be all the original art I was going to purchase I then sat in on a charity auction hosted by Paul Goodenough and Steve Bull, raising money for Rewriting Earth. At that auction I picked up tow additional, and more modest, pieces by PJ Holden and Mike Collins, the latter also working as a storyboard artist for Doctor Who.

I also picked up this interesting poster – again by Chris Weston – mashing up the X-Men with British old-school comedy film franchise Carry On. A poster I can only imagien is lost in translation for all our international readers.

And then there were the comic book signings.

Unlike the last time I visited the big names were limited to signing just three comics each, so with that in mind, I got Brian Bolland to add his signature to Judge Dredd #1 and Judge Dredd #3, alongside Dredd co-creator John Wagner’s Hancock, as well as the 2000th edition of 2000 AD. But, I was happy enough with that. After all, I’d waited decades for Bolland to sign my copy of Judge Dredd #1, so I can always wait another year to get more comics signed by the legend of UK comics.
