Azzarello And Phillips Blast Off With Space Opera ‘Life’ From DSTLRY!

by Austin Gorton

In other “creator involved in the summer X-Men relaunch is also launching a new series from DSTLRY this summer” news, writer Stephanie Phillips teams up with Brian Azzarello, artist Danijel Žeželj and colorist Lee Loughridge for Life, an innovative six issue miniseries!

Life is a six issue interlocking flip book, telling two different stories set on a desolate prison planet which violently collide. Edited by industry legend Will Dennis, who oversaw Y: The Last Man and The Losers, amongst others, the first issue of Life will be on sale in both digital and print editions later this summer. The world of Life is a grim future where the worst prisoners face a new extreme punishment—artificial immortality that lasts the length of their combined sentences. Eventually, the forgotten prisoners run afoul of intergalactic thieves eyeing the planet’s long-abandoned mines. Yet unbeknownst to the thieves, their target is far from deserted, as the remaining prisoners have mutated into grotesque monsters.

In a joint statement, Phillips and Azzarello said, “Life is about justice—and that being given more life isn’t necessarily a gift. It explores incarceration and culture through the extreme filter of crime fiction. It’s confrontational, though Danijel makes it incredibly seductive to look at,” “The flipbook design allows us to develop two narrative perspectives that will clash and segue through a prison break and a heist. Pick your poison.”

Added Žeželj, “World building on Life has been immensely rewarding, allowing me to approach this brutal ecosystem from two very different angles. DSTLRY’s oversized format allows so much more freedom to accomplish that feat.”

Each story, told from the perspectives of the prisoners or the thieves, unfolds independently through each end of Life‘s innovative flipbook design. The stories will collide in surprising ways, as Phillips and Azzarello reveal the layered connections between the two groups and their looming brutal confrontation.

“Stephanie, Brian, and Danijel are responsible for some of the most transgressive and challenging comics the medium can call its own, and Life amplifies that experimentation,” DSTLRY Co-Founders Chip Mosher & David Steinberger said in a join statement. “This series pushes boundaries in both form and function. It’s simply arresting.”

Life will be published d in DSTLRY’s signature Prestige format. As a flip-book, each issue features full cover art on the front on and back with spot gloss on robust stock. While Life #1features 56 pages, subsequent issues will be the DSTLRY standard 48 pages.
