Jumping On– Series Premieres, One-Shots, And New Story Arcs For June 26, 2024

by Brendan M. Allen

One of the most frustrating things about finding new comics to read and enjoy is finding a good jumping on point. It can be confusing and disheartening to pick up a single issue from the middle of an arc without having the context of the previous chapters.

With that in mind, here are a few New Story Arcs, Series Premieres, and One-Shots that caught my eye for this upcoming New Comic Book Day, Wednesday, June 26, 2024.

Featured Series Premieres, One-Shots, and New Story Arcs:

Anansi Boys #1, Dark Horse

My older brother Kevin was a delightful weirdo who trained wolves, bears, and lions, and had about a hundred cats. Okay. Seventeen cats, but still. That’s a lot. Once when I was visiting, I found a copy of Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman on the pillow in his guest bedroom. I stayed up all night reading, and then went on to read American Gods, Stardust, Smoke & Mirrors, and many more. Anansi Boys has always been my favorite.

Fat Charlie Nancy leads a boring life as a boring Londoner, until he discovers two things. His recently deceased father was, in fact, Anansi the Spider, the trickster god of African folklore, and he has a twin brother he’s never met. These secrets kick off a reality-spanning odyssey of sibling rivalry, jealous deities, and one poor soul who’ll realize what it means to be a god.

My first read of Anansi Boys #1 gave me the same feels as the first time I dove into the novel for that all-nighter almost twenty years ago. Buy this book.

Resident Alien: The Book of Life #1, Dark Horse

Everything changes for small town alien-in-hiding Harry Vanderspiegel in the latest Resident Alien mini-series. Auntie Asta becomes Mother Asta, and Harry cosplays as Jason Voorhees before making a surprising plea to his home planet.

Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons II – Sons of Giants #1, IDW

There are A LOT of Godzilla books out there at the moment, and I’m loving every minute of it. Here’s a sequel to last Summer’s Here They Be Dragons. Frank and Inaki Miranda reunite to explore the conspiracy that led to Sir Francis Drake hiding his treasure on Monster Island.

Who are the Sons of Giants, and what is their mission? More importantly, what is their connection to Godzilla and the other monsters? This series shows us how it all came to be, how Godzilla was discovered by the leaders of the world, and how it changed history forever.
