Even More Monstrous Amounts Of Fun This Summer With ‘Monster Fun’

Rebellion’s all-ages/kids’ comic Monster Fun goes from strength to strength with monthly issues and much more coming this summer…

In stark contrast to all the naysaying old men who bemoan that kids’ comics just aren’t as good as they once were – nope, they’re just different (please get that into your nostalgia-riddled head, sir) – there’s never been a better time for kids and all-ages comics than now.

The latest data from Nielsen (who do all the complicated sales chart data stuff) shows that the Children’s Graphic Novel and Comic Strip category showing a 425% volume growth since 2019. You only have to head into your local Tesco or Walmart to see that.

Additionally, the creators of these kid-friendly comics and graphic novels are getting the acclaim they richly deserve – look at Jamie Smart winning Best Illustrated Children’s Book and Best Illustrator for Bunny Vs Monkey: Multiverse Mix-Up at the British Book Awards 2024 and the hordes of kids and teens that flock to Dav Pilkey, Raina Telgemeier, and Alice Oseman.

And British kids’ comics really are going through a bit of a creative resurgence over the last decade. Sure, we’ve always got the Beano (seems so unnatural to call it simply Beano, even though I know we’re supposed to) and hopefully always will. But full credit for a new generation of kids’ comics, Monster Fun included, has to go to the Phoenix comic, which really did pave the way and show publishers of all sizes that kids’ comics will still find a rabid fanbase of reading kids who just love their comics. Kids don’t read comics anymore? Yeah, right.

In addition to the really fun monthly issues that I keep showing you here at Comicon, Monster Fun is launching a big summer competition, new subscriber-exclusive issues, and The Monster Fun Collection of graphic novels this summer.

Sure, you can pick up Monster Fun from your newsagent here in the UK – and if you can’t see it, and to speak to the manager right away – but if you go the subscription route, there’s two very special subscriber-exclusive issues: Epic Antics, with a cover from Nick Roche and John-Paul Bove, and The Helly & Gums Special featuring the always funny Hell’s Angel by Chris Garbutt and Gums by Stace Whittle and Brett Parson.

The new Me and My Monster Monster Fun Summer Drawing Competition gives young readers the chance to draw themselves and a creepy creation, with the winner getting to star in their very own comic strip produced by Monster Fun creators later on in the year.

In July, The Monster Fun Collection begins a new range of graphic novels – Steel Commando: No Time To Lose by Ned Hartley and Dan Boultwood sees World War II robot hero Steel Commando travel across past, present, and future to defeat the forces of evil on an epic time-travel adventure, whilst The Leopard From Lime Street: Birthright by Simon Furman, Laurent Lefeuvre, Nick Roche, and PJ Holden sees young Billy Farmer unlock his powers after being bitten by a radioactive leopard, uncover family secrets, and just maybe save his town from super villains intent on stopping him in his tracks.

These two graphic novels arrive on shelves from 18th July. Children and parents can pick up the Monster Fun June Issue on shelves from the 5th June 2024, followed by the July and August issues on 3rd July 2024 and 7th August 2024 respectively.
