Review: ‘Uncle Scrooge & The Infinity Dime’ Is An Unexpectedly Fun Marvel-Disney Mash-Up

If you’re like me, Disney’s acquisition of Marvel Entertainment in 2009 opened up lots of possibilities. One that hasn’t yet been fulfilled was applying Marvel-style storytelling to Disney’s vast catalog of characters… until today.

Uncle Scrooge & The Infinity Dime #1 tells a Disney comic story with Marvel’s sensibilities. It comes from Jason Aaron, Paolo Mattura, Francesco D’ippolino, Lucio De Giuseppe, Alessandro Pastrovicchio, Vitale Mangiatordi, Giada Perissinotto, Arianna Consonni, and Joe Caramagna.

Thanks to one wrong turn, Scrooge McDuck became a darker, greedier man. Not long after, he found a few source of wealth and riches: the Multiverse! Once the Scrooge we know and love encounters this Scrooge-Above-All, he realizes there’s only one thing he can do — put a stop to his dark self, maybe with a little help from himself…

I was surprised by how much fun I had with this story. It captures the spirit of Carl Barks or Don Rosa, but has the style of a Marvel book through and through. This might be the best single issue Aaron has written for Marvel since his Star Wars. It’s funny, has a great spirit of adventure and uses the world of Duckberg so well. I smiled through much of it, with a few gags just hitting the sweet spot.

Though I don’t understand why there was a need for four different art teams for a slightly longer than normal one-shot, the art throughout was top notch. The action was clear and engaging. The layouts were exciting and full of energy. And for a story full of different Scrooges, each one was distinct while being clearly Scrooge McDuck.

This one-shot is something Marvel’s needed to do for some time with the Disney adventure characters. I’m glad to see it worked, and I’m hoping that the others coming soon capture this same energy.
