‘Suicide Squad ISEKAI’ Debuts With Strong First Three Episodes
by Tito W. James
Warner Bros. Japan and WIT Studio have teamed up to create an all-new original anime series titled Suicide Squad: Isekai. Fan-favorite villains like Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Clayface, King Shark, and Peacemaker are tasked with a deadly mission and transported to an epic fantasy world.
The DCU and anime have always been a peanut-butter and chocolate combination. Whether your a fan of the original Teen Titans show or the more recent My Adventures With Superman— there’s something about the anime-infused DCU that just works. ReZero creator Tappei Nagatsuki provided the screenplay for this anime series and managed to blend iconic super-villains with the popular Isekai genre.
Harley Quinn and Joker have the more chemistry than we’ve seen from the couple in a long time. It totally makes sense why Harley would fall for a flamboyant bad boy and go full PunkRock rebel. Clayface is also given the “ikemen” makeover and his shape-shifting power are explored more than in the comics. Fans of the Batman manga with know that Japan loves Clayface as a villain. Peacemaker is the perfect masked stoic with a voice worthy of a super sentai character. Each member of the Suicide Squad has translated beautifully into the anime aesthetic and tonality. We’ve seen these characters bungled in the past– so its rewarding to see The Suicide Squad done right!
Suicide Squad: Isekai is now streaming on Hulu and MAX.
